Becoming Jane

Why do people hate Anne Hathaway so much?

Release date: March 9, 2007
Director: Julian Jarrold
Language: English

Who should watch this movie: People who really love Jane Austen.

When should you watch this movie: When you are between the ages of 13 and 16.

The sell: This movie holds a special place in my heart because of the time/age at which I watched it, but that being said, it’s definitely not for everyone. Based (very loosely) on Austen’s supposed affair with Tom Lefroy, this movie is a pseudo “origin story” for the famous author meant specifically for those who are wondering why she never married. It is a sad story about impossible love, but I think it does justice to Austen’s character and doesn’t reduce a brilliant woman to her romantic history. That being said, the movie does seem to imply that her lifetime of singlehood is a result of this failed affair, which is ridiculous. Some people just don’t want to get married, period, get over it.
