Children of Men

Sure, but I still don’t want a baby

YES

Release Date: January 5, 2007
Director: Alfonso Cuarón
Language: English

Who should watch this movie: Fans of science fiction and/or dystopian dramas. People who may not be big fans of deep science fiction a la 2001 Space Odyssey, but who enjoy the theoretical implications of apocalypse scenarios.

When should you watch this movie: Maybe not right now? The subject matter may hit a little too close to home for some given the decay of western supremacy at the hands of a pandemic. But if you want to lean into it, this is the movie for you.

The sell: Children of Men stands out from other apocalypse worlds, not only because of its creative premise, but because it is so familiar. Not much is different between the world of the film and the world we wake up to every morning. Though the world has certainly changed, it is still largely recognizable. Cuarón doesn’t place us in a mad max desert of monsters. Rather, he drops us into a city with cars, coffee shops, and news of political turmoil playing on the television. The triumph of this movie therefore lies not in creative world building but in convincing extrapolation of human behavior during crisis. Oh also, major themes of anti-immigration policy which is just WAY too accurate.
