Hero / 英雄

Is Zhang Yimou a nationalist? We may never know

Release date: October 24, 2002
Director: Zhang Yimou
Language: Mandarin

Who should watch this movie: Photographers. Dancers. Costume designers. Fans of the 2012 Beijing Olympics opening ceremony.

When should you watch this movie: When you want to be wowed.

The sell: When it comes to mis en scene, no one has ever doubted Zhang Yimou’s expertise. The man is a genius with color and motion, especially on a big scale. Yimou lives for the drama and I am here for it. Hero is yet another example of his ability to make you audibly gasp at the sheer beauty of any given scene. This movie is heavy with symbolism as the story explores subjectivity through the accounts of an unreliable narrator. Each color stands for a different perspective, a different version of a different piece of the same story. The painting-like nature of each episode contributes to the diagetic fiction. We may never know what really happened, but we know it was nice to look at.
