Top-and and I can’t stress this enough-me, Rachel Weisz
Release date: August 30, 2018
Director: Yorgos Lanthimos
Who should watch this movie: Fans of The Lobster. Anyone who had an “nemesis” in middle school.
When should you watch this movie: When you’re drunk with your film-nerd friends.
The sell: The Favourite is not a simple story about a love triangle as it was made out to be in the trailers. I mean it kinda is, but it is also so much more. This movie is about three women, one of whom is the Queen and thus has absolute power over the lives and livelihoods of the other two (and also every other person in the kingdom). The Favourite is DARK. The stakes are high. The love is deep. The costumes are HOT. Everyone is terrible. It’s also really funny. This movie asks if it is even possible to love in proximity to absolute power. The answer is yes and no. Olivia Coleman brings something otherworldly to this role and it is breathtaking to watch. Not to mention Rachel Weisz, also at the top of her game. The Favourite deserved more awards than it got and it got a lot. Yorgos Lanthimos did good work in The Lobster, but The Favourite blows it out of the water (sorry Collin Farrel). [Yes this subtitle was ripped from a Reductress headline, sue me]
