Who should see this movie: Everyone.
When should you see this movie: Right now.
The sell: In 2005, Dave Chappelle hosted a block party in Bed Stuy, Brooklyn, featuring Kanye West, Common, Mos Def, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, The Roots, and many more. This is the documentary they shot in the process. Dave Chappelle also busses in people from his hometown in Ohio, including a full marching band, for the concert. This is a concert video meets documentary meets stand-up special. I have never laughed and cried so much as when I saw this movie. Despite being heavy with nostalgia, this movie maintains a sharp observational edge. The camera and Dave Chappelle hone in on not just people, but also objects and moments in time. This movie is political, this movie is joyful, this movie is all around stunning. Dave Chappelle’s Block Party is unlike any movie you have ever seen, I guarantee it.
