Jennifer’s Body

This is all Michael Bay’s fault

Release date: September 18, 2009
Director: Karyn Kusama
Language: English

Who should watch this movie: Fans of Mean Girls. Lesbians. Fans of classic horror.

When should you watch this movie: When you’re feeling particularly guilty for the way you talked about Megan Fox in middle school.

The sell: Jennifer’s Body is a rom-com, change my mind. Fresh off the success of Juno, this movie was meant to be the second of many Diablo Cody productions in Hollywood. Unfortunately, Jennifer’s Body suffered a severe case of Bad Marketing and upon its release was lambasted by the critics. Much of the marketing centered on sexualizing Megan Fox and appealing to teenage boys, which consequently erased the themes of female friendship, repressed homosexuality, and misogyny. It also distracted from the comedy. Jennifer’s Body is not only scary, it’s also funny. It’s cleverly written and delivered, and deserves to be categorized alongside other teen comedies such as Heathers and Mean Girls. Luckily Jennifer’s Body has recently been resurrected by young queer cinephiles, and is now a cult favorite.
