Who should watch this movie: Fans of Tarantino. People who know Tarantino’s filmography well. Folks familiar with the Manson Family incident.
When should you watch this movie: When you’re doing an Oscar winners marathon. When you start to think, hm, maybe I should go kill some rich people.
The sell: In Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, more so than any of his other films, Tarantino knows who’s watching. He knows that you, the audience, have sat through Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill, Inglorious Bastards, Django, maybe even Hateful Eight. He knows what you expect going into a “Tarantino film,” and he plays with that. He uses the audience’s expectations to build suspense in an exciting way. Not only does he use his own style history to his advantage, but also actual history. We know that historical accuracy has never been a concern of ol’ Quentin’s but we can’t help but project our knowledge of not so distant historical events onto the story that he’s telling here. This too contributes to building tension that ends in a remarkably satisfying climax (if you’re into that kind of thing.) The cherry on top is stellar – I mean seriously top tier – acting from both Brad Pitt and Leo DiCaprio. I mean, I knew that Brad could be funny (have you seen Burn After Reading?) but seriously these two together are phenomenal. Props to Tarantino for making a movie that surprised me for once.
