The Last Airbender

Release date: July 1, 2010
Director: M. Night Shyamalan
Language: English

Who should watch this movie: People who just finished the animated series and want to see why everyone hates the movie adaptation

When should you watch this movie: When you are part of the team making a new and better version of live-action Avatar and you want to see what NOT to do

The sell: This movie was so bad on it’s own. If you had no exposure to the source material and watched this movie, you would think it was bad. Thus, if you Have seen the TV show, the comparison makes it 100000x worse. Problem #1: Casting. Not only did they white-wash 90% of the characters but they also cast Jasper from Twilight as Sokka. Problem #2 (of 12387876123), they butchered the story by removing all the important nuances that turn a children’s story into a sophisticated political narrative. Problem #3 and the last one I will list here: The costume design is one of the saddest things I’ve ever seen. They could at least have been creative with the traditional designs but they just make everything look dopey. JK Problem #4: The bending wasn’t even cool!! This is definitely up there with Eragon on the list of worst movie adaptations ever.

  1. May I suggest watching it dubbed in Portuguese while vacationing on an island in Brazil during a huge thunderstorm? That seemed to work for us.

Also, I’m a huge fan of your reviews and I’m wondering if you would consider watching and reviewing the Indian movie “Dadhak”?

    1. I think watching it dubbed in Portuguese would certainly be an improvement! I haven’t seed Dadhak but I will add it to the list asap. Glad you’re liking the reviews 🙂 Thanks for reading!
