Someone forgot to film the second half

Release date: March 10, 2018
Director: Julia Hart
Language: English

Who should watch this movie: Gugu Mbatha-Raw fangirls. Folks who’ve read anything by Zora Neal Hurston

When should you watch this movie: When the world is ending. When you feel alone.

The sell: This would make an excellent exposition to an excellent movie, however, there is no “rest of the movie.” Plot action begins to unfold in the last 5 minutes and the film ends before anything legitimately exciting happens. What’s frustrating is that there is so much interesting material to work with. Three generations of women come together – anchored by Gugu Mbatha-Raw’s powerhouse acting – to resolve not just their own conflict but also (potentially) the world. The concept is a blend of familiar dystopian and superpower tropes, but reimagined in a way that feels entirely new. The full length of this movie is dedicated to exploring each of these three characters in and through their relationships with each other. It’s slow but thoughtful in its treatment of past traumas and current tensions, all laced with deep deep love. Again, it would make a truly remarkable first half of a movie that unfortunately does not exist. My only hope is that they make a sequel.
