Release date: March 8, 1996
Director: The Coen Brothers
Who should watch this movie: People who hate their in-laws. People from Minnesota.
When should you watch this movie: When you and your spouse have a fight. When the temperature hits -10 degrees Fahrenheit.
The sell: This comedy of errors has an abundance of both comedy and error. A dumb plot gone predictably wrong veers even more sideways as bizarre complications arise. The cast of characters includes hit-men, car salesmen, and stamp artists, all of whom have nothing in common besides being the most midwestern personalities you can imagine. The straight man to the movie’s comedic conceit is a charming and VERY pregnant cop played by Frances McDormand. Her dogged pursuit of truth and thick Minnesotan accent tie the whole saga together in a not quite neat but still highly satisfying bow. If you need a sign from the universe to start a turtleneck collection, this is it.
