Night Is Short, Walk On Girl / 夜は短し歩けよ乙女

I will only be accepting confessions of love in the form of guerrilla theater

Release date: April 7, 2017
Director: Masaki Yuasa
Language: Japanese

Who should watch this movie: University students. Theater nerds. Anyone who’s been out drinking in Kansai (Kanto folks need not apply).

When should you watch this movie: When you’ve just discovered Gen Hoshino’s discography. When you’re in love.

The sell: Pure, unadulterated joy. This movie is a dreamy stroll through a Kyoto summer, inundated with alcohol, and filled to the brim with humor. A young woman floats through the night, encountering stranger and stranger people, gods, and scenarios. She is pursued by her classmate, hellbent on declaring his love. Despite his dogged commitment, he is stalled by increasingly outlandish obstacles. Animation is employed to its fullest extent, stretching the boundaries of action into the realm of feeling. The effect is whimsical if not a little bizarre. Though having experience in the Japanese nightlife adds a dimension of familiarity to this wonderful romp, it is not required to wholeheartedly enjoy the film.
