Director: Steven Soderbergh
Who should watch this movie: Fans of Oceans 12. People who watch NASCAR. People who make fun of people who watch NASCAR.
When should you watch this movie: On a Sunday with your friends and with some beer.
The sell: This quirky heist flick has more heart in one monotone sentence than most tear-jerker dramas do in 115 minutes and that is only in part thanks to John Denver. The rest is thanks to stellar performances by an unlikely ensemble cast, which brings together Channing Tatum, Adam Driver, and Daniel Craig (and several memorable cameos). A combination of heist movie fundamentals with eccentric characters in rural West Virginia somehow results in a bizarre synergy that lands this Hail Mary of a movie concept solidly on two feet. The dialogue, delivered with an exaggerated drawl, is hilarious from start to finish. The attention to detail is impressive, keeping hold of several plot lines cleanly and clearly to the end. Through all the dust and gasoline, this film is additionally able to deliver emotional satisfaction in its portrayal of tight family bonds and love. Daniel Craig does a better southern accent here than he does in Knives Out, so just watch this movie instead.
