I think I’m missing something?
Release date: February 10, 2017
Director: Chad Stahelski
Who should watch this movie: People who liked the first John Wick movie. Folks with a lot of anger they want to excise vicariously through Keanu Reeves.
When should you watch this movie: When you’re feeling blasé about action movies.
The sell: If you actively choose not to think about this movie, it’s good! Excellent action sequences in beautiful locations set to fun music, whats not to like? Too bad I thought about it. This sequel gets off to an interesting start, introducing new characters who may provide an interesting conflict to the plot. But no! That’s just exposition. We never see those characters again. This happens again and again in this film, as well as the reverse, where new characters are introduced with absolutely no information and we’re expected to believe the stakes of their action because of some implied (unseen) history with the protagonist. And don’t get me started on the internal contradictions in John Wick’s character – a supposed noble assassin who just wants out, but also is down to Cause A Scene and kill a lot of extraneous people, just because? None of these gripes make John Wick: Chapter 2 a bad movie, it’s simply that this movie does not hold up to scrutiny. But maybe that’s the point.
