The sell: A Taxing Woman is a high stakes cat and mouse chase between some of Tokyo’s worst gangsters and a tax auditor. It’s as absurd as it sounds. It reads exactly like a classic crime drama, with one side fighting for the law and the other pursuing a life of crime, except the crime in question is tax evasion and the law enforcement comes in the form of an irritatingly dogged tax official. Trust me, it is not boring. Nobuko Miyamoto is a genius and turns her character’s annoying persistence into charm, and has you rooting for her all the way. It’s funny, it’s over the top, and the ending is perfect. Seriously, best movie ending ever.
